Pregnancy massage is a more specialised area for obvious reasons, the health of mother and baby must be considered.
Massage therapy during pregnancy is most beneficial in the later stages when expectant mums are often suffering from lower back pain, leg pain, headaches and sciatica (to name a few). Combined with gentle exercises and stretching, massage can provide great relief during this ‘preparation phase’.
The postpartum period is critical for new mothers, their babies and families. Studies over the past 20 years have found the use of massage is effective for reducing labor pain, decreasing stress hormones, alleviating depression and anxiety, and increasing interactive behaviours between parent and child.
